Mimico is a neighbourhood in the downtown Toronto area. It is bounded by Evans Avenue, Lake Ontario, Mimco Creek and Dwight Avenue. The name of ‘Mimico’ comes from a Mississauga Indian word meaning ‘the place of the wild pigeons’ possibly referring to passenger pigeons. The former Mimico Street adopted the name Islington Street. The current Mimico area and other lakeshore communities were eventually linked up by an independent streetcar line which eventually merged with the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission). Some famous personalities have been natives of Mimico including, Sir Earnest MacMillan, David Hornell, a recipient of the Victoria Cross, Timothy Maler, hockey player, Brendan Shanahan, and the Canadian stand up comedy team of Wayne & Shuster. Mimco is also the beautiful location of Mimico Memorial Park, which is located in the heart of old Mimico. During the summer months Mimico is also known for its community festivals, mainly taking place in the midst of Mimico Memorial Park or along Lake Ontario.
